National Senior Citizens Day is one of our favorite days of the year. It is a special day that takes time to honor the seniors in our lives. On August 21st each year, we are all encouraged to take time to recognize and show appreciation for the many contributions and values older adults have brought to our families, homes, and society as a whole.
National Senior Citizens days helps us to recognize contributions that senior citizens have made – and will make – in our various communities. More than 25 years ago, this day of observance was established to help bring awareness to the health, social, and economic issues that impact the lives of our senior citizens.
Although there are some individuals that choose to celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14 (Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act on this day in 1935), most celebrate on the 21st. In 1988, Ronald Reagan (who was president at the time) declared August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day. In his Presidential Proclamation made on August 19, 1988, President Reagan said:
"For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they
continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and
esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to
lead lives of independence and dignity.”
Well said, President Reagan; we couldn’t agree more.
Walker Plaza in Anoka will be celebrating with fresh hot coffee and doughnuts for all residents and staff. The marketing and life enrichment staff has teamed up to provide this event and will also have raffle gifts for the residents. To conclude the celebration, Malcolm Anderson will be leading the residents in a high powered sing-a-long of old and new songs. A great way to start your day!
