Lola Amendt is pioneering a new role at Care Suites of Edina, serving as the Director of Kaleidoscope memory care. With a passion for improving communication and trying new things that benefit everyone involved, she has a unique ability to connect with others and communicate complex ideas in an easy-to-understand way. Since Lola previously served as an executive director with Walker, she’s committed to our mission.
“I get to help residents in Kaleidoscope memory care live their best lives. The care we provide is really about anticipating what people need and want,” she explained. “Using creativity, we enhance programs, prevent triggers from getting in the way, and personalize care by involving families and other team members.”
Lola and her team focus on using non-pharmological approaches to help manage difficult behaviors that result from residents being unable to effectively communicate what they need. Since each resident’s experiences and needs are different, team members receive unique, specialized education to provide the best care possible. She said, “Our Kaleidoscope program shows that programming for residents with Alzheimer’s or memory loss is important. We constantly brainstorm and implement creative approaches because our residents deserve the very best we can give. We encourage residents to participate in activities they enjoy or utilize strategies such as Music & Memory®, aromatherapy, or light therapy. Involving family members and an interdisciplinary team of caregivers can enhance our effectiveness.”

One way Walker Methodist builds these relationships is through the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association hosts walks all across the nation, and the event in Minnesota is one of the largest, both in attendees and funds raised. The Twin Cities chapter is hosting this year’s walk on Saturday, September 18 at Target Field. To learn more or register, visit their website today.
To make supporting the cause more accessible, some communities (like Care Suites) also host their own walk in Edina. “For families to know they are doing something that makes a difference by raising money for research, as well as awareness… That’s huge,” said Lola. “And, they know they are not alone on this journey of memory loss––we’re here to support them each step of the way. It becomes less overwhelming.”
