Today, Alzheimer’s is one of the most common diseases of older adults in the United States, with approximately 5 million Americans diagnosed. Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that causes memory, thinking, and behavior complications. This disease generally affects adults age 65 and older, though 5% of those diagnosed experience early onset Alzheimer’s which appears around ages 40-50. Throughout its three-stage progression, Alzheimer’s can cause loss of memory, confusion, and physical inabilities. Alzheimer's disease cannot be prevented, nor has research found exactly what causes it, but precautions can be taken. Choosing to stay well informed on this disease that is becoming more and more prevalent may reduce your risk in developing it. Alzheimer’s experts recommend maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, both physically and mentally, and following a heart-healthy diet to keep yourself and your brain in good condition.
